Categories: Basic Photography, Exposure, f-stop, ISO, Light, Photography, Shutter Speed

Light is necessary for photography. We adjust to the available light by changing the f-stop, shutter speed, or ISO setting in our camera. Without light we won’t have a photograph.

Learning how to recognize and utilize the different characteristics of light will make for much better photographs. In this episode we will talk about the quantity, quality, and direction of light. By learning how to see and use these different characteristics of light you will be able to create some stunning and breath-taking photographs.

Learn to see the light!

How do you compose the subject in your photograph to make it look the best? Are there any rules or guidelines to help in composition? Today’s podcast is all about composition and how to compose subjects in the frame. The goal is to get it right in camera to make post-production easier and less time consuming. We will cover three basic rules of composition and then offer a few additional suggestions when composing a subject. We will also discuss when it might be right to break these rules. At the end of the podcast you will be given the opportunity to take on an assignment to help you learn more about composition. You are encouraged to upload your photographs to our Flickr account here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/1763280@N24/

The assignment is:

The best photograph in each category will win an 8×10 photograph of any of the nature photos on my website. Deadline to submit your photographs is November 15, 2011. Good luck!

Episode 5 – Exposure

Three variables make up the exposure tripod and determine how much light reaches the camera sensor when making a photograph. If not enough light gets to the sensor, then the subject will be too dark. If too much light reaches the sensor, then the image can be too light. Working with ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture we can work with the light to obtain proper exposure. This is a critical skill in creating photographs. Learning how to expose a photo properly now will help you far into the future.
